Rex Ryan ditched his weekly stand-up routine, turned serious and admitted that nothing feels good about the Jets' three-game funk that has them on the brink of free-fall. Six weeks into a season filled with high expectations, Gang Green (2-3) faces a virtual must-win against the Dolphins Monday night at MetLife Stadium.

"Everything stinks when you lose," Ryan said. "The food tastes terrible. Beer is warm, everything, when you lose. It's absolutely rotten."

Although Ryan has faced this situation before - the Jets rebounded from a pair of three-game losing streaks in 2009 to make it to the AFC Championship Game - nothing is guaranteed now. The winless Dolphins (0-4) won't be pushovers. After all, Ryan has lost both home games to that divisional foe the past two years, including a woeful performance in the 10-6 defeat last season.

"It doesn't matter what they're playing like this year," safety Jim Leonhard said. "They always play us extremely tough. Offensively, they got a lot of talent. They got guys that can beat you and will beat you if you let them."

On the surface, the Dolphins appear overmatched. Starting quarterback Chad Henne is out for the season. Journeyman Matt Moore has more career interceptions (18) than touchdowns (16). The Dolphins' 28th-ranked defense isn't scaring anyone.

None of that matters to Ryan, who's dealing with unrest among several players after his team's offensive struggles. Right guard Brandon Moore took exception to Santonio Holmes' critical comments about the offensive line last week.

Ryan admitted that he won't need any additional motivation for his players Monday night. "We look in the mirror and we see 0-3 in our last three (games)," he said.

"In baseball, you got 162 games, so basically when you lose a (football) game, that's almost like the equivalent of a 10-game losing streak," Ryan said. "So we're on a 30-game losing streak, if you will. So that's how desperate you feel to try to get a victory."

Despite the team's poor execution on the road the past three weeks, Mark Sanchez isn't about to press the panic button.

"I feel like we just need to improve just a little bit and the wins are right there," Sanchez said. "Other than the Ravens game, we haven't been blown out. We're right in these games. We have kind of found a way to lose, where last year we really found a way to win. That's the difference. It's so small."

The sense of urgency is palpable. Although more than two-thirds of the season remains, Ryan realizes how critical it is to win Monday night. He isn't taking any comfort that there are still plenty of games left on the schedule.

"We just don't want to keep saying that, and as the losses mount we keep saying, 'We got time,'" Ryan said. "Let's try to get it taken care of right now. We're not looking down the road."

To that end, Sanchez conveyed a simple message to his team all week: "You can't practice like you're 2-3," Sanchez said. "We got to practice like we're 5-0."

Ryan relayed his own message to build a foundation for success brick-by-brick each day in practice. Despite the Jets' early-season struggles, Ryan still believes he'll be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in February.

"Do I think we'll win it?" Ryan said. "Yeah, absolutely."

Before that happens, his team knows it needs to win Monday night to stop the bleeding. The national stage awaits.

"Play fast," Holmes said. "Put up some points on the board early. Just run those guys out of here. Let them come in with their 0-4 record and leave with an 0-5 record ... I think (Monday night) is the time to definitely turn it around. The spotlight is on us. Everybody's watching."

Nick Mangold (ankle) is listed as questionable, but is expected to start. The Jets confirmed the Daily News report last week that CB Donald Strickland (concussion) is out.

After three straight losses in a brutal stretch of road games, the New York Jets (2-3) return home to MetLife Stadium to face the division rival Miami Dolphins (0-4) in what is, for all intents and purposes, a “must-win” game.

The New England Patriots already had a comfortable two-game lead in the AFC East race over the Jets going into this weekend, and with a last second win over the Dallas Cowboys, now sit alone at the top of the division at 5-1.

Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills fell to 4-2 on the year after losing to the New York Giants at MetLife stadium Sunday, as the Jets got a little bit of help in the AFC East race from their roommates in blue.

If the Jets can beat the Dolphins on Monday night, they will move back within a game of the Bills as they try to make up the lost ground they squandered during their current three-game losing streak.

The Dolphins will feature a new starting quarterback in former Carolina Panther Matt Moore, as they try to get off the schnide after their Week 5 bye.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Jets defense against the pedestrian Dolphins offense, led by rookie running back Daniel Thomas as veteran wideout Brandon Marshall.

While Marshall has already made his voice heard this week, (much to the amusement of the Jets, I might add) I believe the Jets defense has to focus first on stopping the run and making Miami one-dimensional, like they did in their last home game, a blowout victory over Jacksonville.

On offense, the key for the Jets will be stopping Pro Bowl pass rusher Cameron Wake, who will likely target right tackle Wayne Hunter, who although he’s been better as the season goes on, remains the weak point of the Jets offensive line.

If the protection is there for quarterback Mark Sanchez, this seems to be a defense that he can handle. The Dolphins have not gotten great play from their safeties, so perhaps this is a game where wide receivers Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress can break out.

Tight end Dustin Keller should also find some room to roam across the middle of the field. When Keller has a big game, the Jets tend to have a lot more success. When he doesn’t, the Jets struggle.

Sanchez and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer need to do a better job of getting the ball into the hands of their playmaking tight end, who’s often a mismatch for defenses with his strength and quickness.

On paper, this is as winnable a game as the Jets have had all season. Other than their easy victory over the Jaguars in Week 2, they’ve faced playoff-caliber teams week in and week out this year.

While “must-win” seems like a strong label for a Week 6 game, it is most definitely a “can’t-lose” game. A fourth straight loss, to a winless team, no less, would be devastating for the Jets playoff hopes.

The Jets and Dolphins seem to play close games down-to-the-wire nearly every time they cross paths with each other. Any long-time football fan remembers the epic battles these teams have had on Monday Night Football in the past.

The Dolphins, quite frankly, have nothing to lose, and that makes them dangerous. The Jets cannot afford to slip up. A win would go a long way towards curing their recent ills.

Jason Taylor expects to hear a familiar sound when he walks out of the tunnel at MetLife Stadium on Monday night.

And, it won’t be warm, friendly cheers.

“I’m sure I’ll be booed,” the Miami Dolphins linebacker said. “I was booed for a lot of years in that stadium or in that town.”

That’s because Taylor was perhaps the most disliked opposing player among New York Jets fans, and the feeling was certainly mutual. But in an unexpected twist to one of the NFL’s top rivalries, Taylor signed with the Jets in the 2010 offseason and fans gradually embraced him as one of their own. He helped New York reach the AFC championship game.

Now he’s back behind enemy lines — in Jets’ fans minds — and will try to help the winless Dolphins (0-4) send the struggling Jets (2-3) to their fourth straight loss Monday night.

“I tried to do my best to make them cheer last year, but being back on the other side of the coin now I’m sure I’ll get my fair share of boos, which is to be expected,” he said. “They’re Jets fans and they should be and they’re very passionate about their team and that’s the way it’s supposed to be.”

Taylor is the NFL’s active career sacks leader and eighth on the all-time list with 133½, including one this season. He’s far from the dominant force he once was, when he was sent quarterbacks to the turf in bunches, but he had his moments in his one season in green and white.

“I’ll say this,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said, “we would’ve loved to have had Jason back.”

Moments after the Jets lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC championship game, Taylor fought back tears as he talked about his time in New York and getting that far in the playoffs for the first time. He had put aside his hatred for the Jets and their fans — he once called them “classless” — for a Super Bowl run. Taylor also acknowledged he didn’t know if he would ever take the field again.

New York appeared to help make that decision when it released him in March. But Taylor still wanted to play, and was hoping for another year with the Jets, who also had interest in bringing him back, but at a lesser salary. Taylor, who had five sacks with the Jets, headed back home to Miami for his third stint with the Dolphins a few months later.

“He was great, a real professional about the way he went about his business, about the way he interacted with other players on the team,” Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez said. “He was respectful with the trainers and equipment staff. He was the ultimate pro. We loved having him, and it’s going to be fun to face him.”

Sanchez took the high road after Taylor recently said he thought Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne had more overall talent than the Jets’ signal caller. Sanchez said that’s what Taylor has to say; he has to support his own guy.

Taylor did offer this about Sanchez: “He’s a darn good quarterback.”

Ryan often praised Taylor last season and talked up his everlasting ability to rush the passer, something the Jets could use now.

“I thought Jason was great for this football team, his presence on the field and in the locker room, as well,” Ryan said. “He’s a class act all the way, so I don’t regret signing Jason Taylor here for one second.”
