After three straight losses in a brutal stretch of road games, the New York Jets (2-3) return home to MetLife Stadium to face the division rival Miami Dolphins (0-4) in what is, for all intents and purposes, a “must-win” game.
The New England Patriots already had a comfortable two-game lead in the AFC East race over the Jets going into this weekend, and with a last second win over the Dallas Cowboys, now sit alone at the top of the division at 5-1.
Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills fell to 4-2 on the year after losing to the New York Giants at MetLife stadium Sunday, as the Jets got a little bit of help in the AFC East race from their roommates in blue.
If the Jets can beat the Dolphins on Monday night, they will move back within a game of the Bills as they try to make up the lost ground they squandered during their current three-game losing streak.
The Dolphins will feature a new starting quarterback in former Carolina Panther Matt Moore, as they try to get off the schnide after their Week 5 bye.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Jets defense against the pedestrian Dolphins offense, led by rookie running back Daniel Thomas as veteran wideout Brandon Marshall.
While Marshall has already made his voice heard this week, (much to the amusement of the Jets, I might add) I believe the Jets defense has to focus first on stopping the run and making Miami one-dimensional, like they did in their last home game, a blowout victory over Jacksonville.
On offense, the key for the Jets will be stopping Pro Bowl pass rusher Cameron Wake, who will likely target right tackle Wayne Hunter, who although he’s been better as the season goes on, remains the weak point of the Jets offensive line.
If the protection is there for quarterback Mark Sanchez, this seems to be a defense that he can handle. The Dolphins have not gotten great play from their safeties, so perhaps this is a game where wide receivers Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress can break out.
Tight end Dustin Keller should also find some room to roam across the middle of the field. When Keller has a big game, the Jets tend to have a lot more success. When he doesn’t, the Jets struggle.
Sanchez and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer need to do a better job of getting the ball into the hands of their playmaking tight end, who’s often a mismatch for defenses with his strength and quickness.
On paper, this is as winnable a game as the Jets have had all season. Other than their easy victory over the Jaguars in Week 2, they’ve faced playoff-caliber teams week in and week out this year.
While “must-win” seems like a strong label for a Week 6 game, it is most definitely a “can’t-lose” game. A fourth straight loss, to a winless team, no less, would be devastating for the Jets playoff hopes.
The Jets and Dolphins seem to play close games down-to-the-wire nearly every time they cross paths with each other. Any long-time football fan remembers the epic battles these teams have had on Monday Night Football in the past.
The Dolphins, quite frankly, have nothing to lose, and that makes them dangerous. The Jets cannot afford to slip up. A win would go a long way towards curing their recent ills.
